The office has completed an outline proposal for the communal house at Æblegården, a new co-housing community in Måløv developed by EcoVillage.

Within a given footprint of just 15.8 × 15.8 metres, the proposal accommodates 500 m² of shared life across two compact yet spatially generous levels. The house brings together workshops, a communal kitchen and dining hall for 84 people, a large south-facing living room, music and exercise rooms, guest rooms and places to work.

The proposal is conceived deliberately as a house in an almost archaic sense of the word: a large pitched roof, a shelter and a shared extension of the home. Rather than expressing the diversity of its programme on the exterior, the many functions are gathered within a single, recognisable figure. The ambition is to create a building that feels familiar and domestic despite its scale and collective use.

The house is intended as a timber structure using predominantly biogenic materials. Material choices are guided by economy, durability and an ability to age with dignity. Externally, the building is clad in treated timber boards, with openings and details in raw aluminium. Internally, the primary spaces are lined with alternating birch and pine plywood, while linoleum tiles form a durable floor throughout.

Particular attention has been given to creating rooms with a distinct spatial and material character: spaces able to accommodate the practical demands of intensive communal use while retaining a sense of warmth and domesticity. Durability, cleaning and maintenance are treated as architectural premises rather than reasons for institutional solutions. In this way, the proposal seeks to reconcile the operational realities of a communal building with the atmosphere of a home.
