Gross floor area: 100 m2
Year: 2023
Budget: Undisclosed
Status: Built

Since opening its doors in 2012, Goods has occupied a distinctive position on Østerbrogade — not only as a menswear store, but as a consistent, evolving space with a loyal customer base rooted in trust, quality, and care. The recent extension and refurbishment, prompted by the takeover of the neighbouring unit, presented an opportunity not for reinvention, but for continuation. The project takes the existing store as its point of departure — physically, atmospherically, and materially — adding new layers with precision and restraint. Like a sourdough starter, fragments of the original are carried forward, mixed with the new, and allowed to rise into something recognisably different, yet deeply familiar.

Rather than clearing the slate, the approach has been to build upon what was already there — repurposing existing furniture, retaining valuable fittings, and reinforcing the spatial identity that Goods has cultivated over more than a decade. A new oak-framed shopfront, echoing the existing facade, signals the expansion from the street. This new frontage is now unified beneath a wide ochre rouge awning, introducing a soft yet distinct presence in the streetscape and offering shelter and shade to passersby. Inside, a wide opening connects the two units, lined with travertine panels in subtle dialogue with the stone cladding of the building’s exterior. The rear portion of the new unit houses a discreet back-of-house area and customer toilet, while the former stockroom has been absorbed into the retail space.

Throughout the store, additions are introduced with care: a round central display table — designed by the office specifically for this project — freestanding wardrobe furniture in oiled plywood, a mirrored twin of the original counter, perforated oak storage cabinets, bespoke brass fittings, and suspended lighting integrated into black timber ceiling beams. The new elements extend the original palette — smoked oak, brushed brass, warm grey plaster, sisal carpets, and Japanese ceramic tiles — resulting in a tactile, cohesive interior that balances simplicity with quiet richness.

Importantly, the redesign is as much about feeling as it is about form. Goods has always aimed to be more than a retail space — it’s a place to spend time, to browse slowly, to talk, or simply to observe. In an age dominated by online retail, the physical experience of visiting a store must offer something inherently human. This project embraces that principle. The atmosphere is calm, warm and domestic in tone — inviting visitors in regardless of whether they are there to make a purchase or just to look around. The result is a retail space that feels open and hospitable, understated yet attentive.

Conceived in close collaboration between client and architect, the project is a quiet counterpoint to the transient nature of commercial interiors — a deliberate investment in longevity, material presence, and the enduring value of real-world experience.
